Comprehensive asbestos physicals

Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral that is flexible, soft, and most importantly resistant to heat. For generations, it was used to provide protection against fire and as insulation. Other common uses for asbestos include siding on houses, roofing shingles, and tile flooring.
Unfortunately, asbestos fibers can flake off and become airborne where they can be inhaled and become lodged in the lungs or gastrointestinal tract. Once there, they can cause a variety of diseases such as mesothelioma and lung cancer.

Workers in certain industries such as construction, heavy industry, hairdressers, firefighters, miners, and electrical generation are at a greater risk for asbestos-related medical complications and are recommended to undergo regular asbestos exams.

OSHA standard medical exams

SCT Medical Clinic provides OSHA standard medical exams that look for signs of asbestos damage.

During your exam, we will review your medical history and perform a physical exam that takes an inventory of your overall health. Depending on your age and exposure history, this exam may include a chest x-ray with B Read. Additionally, we will provide an OSHA respiratory questionnaire to be completed and reviewed by our providers. Finally, a pulmonary function test will be performed to evaluate for any signs of chronic asbestos exposure.

Signs of medical complications from asbestos exposure can take a long time to develop, in some cases up to 20 years. But once the signs show they are not easy to stop. That’s why it is important to undergo regular medical screenings so that we can catch the disease before it has a chance to progress.
